Bulgaria

Me and my boyfriend spent a week at Sunny Beach in Bulgaria. Or at least the hotel was in that area, we spent most of the time in the old Nesebar.

We booked the trip as an unspecified trip, meaning we didn’t know where we’d be staying until we arrived in Bourgas, all we knew was that it would be somewhere along the Bourgas Cost. Neither of us really wanted to end up in Sunny Beach, mainly because we’re not party animals 🙂 For a party animal Sunny Beach is a perfect choice though. Granted the beach itself was great, and we did spend some time there, swimming in the Black Sea 😀

As this is a blog about food and wine, I won’t talk so much about the trip, in terms of what we did, but more about the food and wine in Bulgaria.

I prefer white wine, so I never tried any red ones. Unfortunately I don’t know any names of wines especially good, but in all restaurants where I simply ordered “a glass of white wine” I did get a nice glass of a local white wine. Different wines in different restaurants. I do know that one of the ones I got in a small bottle was produced by grapes from the Thracian valley, and it was a nice rather fruity wine, easy to drink just as a social wine. The wine was in general cheap, at least compared to here in Sweden. You could at some restaurants get imported wine from Italy for instance, but with twice the price in many cases it’s just not worth it as the Bulgarian wines are very good.

As for the food, no big culinary experiences were made. Bulgarians seem to dislike spices 🙁 However everything is well cooked, and prepared with care. I tried a few more traditional dishes, at least the menu did say they were from the Bulgarian kitchen. I can’t say that if you go there you should try this, as there was none of the dishes that stood out from the others. One thing you should try is their garlic bread, it is served warm and is a rather nice bread to have with the starters. The bread is flat, and looks pretty boring, kind of like a pizza without ingredients, but if you find a good restaurant, it’ll have a very balanced taste of garlic.

Ordering a hamburger is rather different to what I’m used to, I read the menu at a fast food place, and you could get the hamburger with a meatball… That got me wondering if a cheeseburger would actually contain meat or if it was gonna be some kind of cheese and bread dish. Luckily it was with meat. Not as I’m used though, I’m fairly sure it was made out of porkmeat, one of the few things were they did seem to use spices in actually. The bread was not the ordinary bun, but some kind of round bread folded up to form a pocket for meat, salad and other things.
