Strawberries and milk (or cream)

Apart from strawberries my garden holds some salad, parsley, dill, radish (overdue for eating though, so time to get them harvested and possibly plant more seeds), black and red currants, red and green gooseberry and also an apple tree. The currant bushes are small due to being cut down and moved couple years ago. We bought the gooseberry bushes last year, so they wont give me much to harvest until they grow bigger either.

Oh, almost forgot I did plant some carrots as well, but the crop seem to become rather modest, guess the seeds was to old or they just didn’t like the soil here 🙁 Will most likely try again next year though.

One thing that failed utterly was planting black salsify, one big problem is definitely that I had no idea how they would look as a plant, another is that the soil might have been to hard for them, we got mainly clay soil here. I tried blending it with good topsoil for my plantation but as we didn’t have the possibility to dig out a big hole and fill with topsoil alone it might not have been enough.

Will try again next year though, as I now have looked at pictures so I’d know they aren’t weed in my plantation 🙂 And with it being a perennial plant I guess I in theory could plant them during fall as well as spring, might even be able to get harvest earlier in the season that way.

I also plan on planting garlic for next year, and from what I’ve learned by reading that should be done somewhere during late fall to get best result. Soil temperature should be around 8 degrees celsius to prevent them from start sprouting and grow green leafs before winter comes. You can actually plant cloves of the same garlic you buy at the local grocerystore for cooking, but for best result it is recommended to buy them for the occasion from a specialist.
